The Colony Half Marathon Set For This Saturday With Dallas Mavericks' Donnie Nelson

The 2nd Annual Colony Half Marathon is set for October 18 at Stewart Creek Park, The Colony. Dallas Mavericks President of Operations and General Manager Donnie Nelson is the official starter for the race.  He will blow the air horn at 8 a.m.

“Our race donates 100 percent of our net proceeds to local cancer charities through our designated cancer fighting non-profit, AngelsFallUp,” said Ronald G. Rossetti, Director of The Colony Half Marathon. “We are excited about our second year and want to invite everyone to participate and help us stand up to cancer by supporting the race or running in the race as a participant.”

The Colony Half Marathon is a cause race that is 100 percent volunteer organized and managed.  Race officials predict a larger crowd than last year and challenge residents to help double the AngelsFallUp contribution to cancer charities this year.  The marathon’s certified course, with over half the distance along beautiful Lake Lewisville, begins and ends in Stewart Creek Park and features a crushed granite trail. Runners receive a huge race medallion and a high quality technical t-shirt. A post-race party, pizza, refreshments and awards ceremony will immediately follow with entertainment by the J.Romo Band.

Title Sponsors for the race include The Tribute, The City of The Colony and The Colony Roadrunners Club.

The on-line registration race entry fee is $65.  The cost goes up to $75 the day of the event.  Runners who register on-line before October 16 can use this special discount code at check-out for $10.00 off:  FACEBOOK10.   To register, find more information and a complete list of the 40 race sponsors, please visit the official race URL at:  http://www.thecolonyhalf.com.

The race beneficiary, AngelsFallUp, exists to inspire hope for a world free of cancer and to actively support agencies and individuals who are fighting the disease.  The non-profit’s mission is to increase funding for cancer research and treatment, honor those who have been lost, celebrate survivors and support caregivers.  The goal is very simple: less angels falling up to cancer.  AngelsFallUp was inspired by Megan’s story.  A pediatric cancer patient from the time she was only 11 months old, Megan did not allow herself to be victimized by cancer.  Instead, she exuded hope, courage, generosity and a deep concern for others.  One of Megan’s last conversations, overheard by a nurse, was with a fellow pediatric cancer patient who was feeling very afraid of losing his life to cancer.  Megan comforted him when she told him “I’ll go first, and I’ll be there waiting for you.”  Soon thereafter, cancer robbed her of speech, so she wrote this final message for her family and her friends. “I will be watching out for you.  Watch over each other.  I love you forever.  Never fight unless its’ worth the battle.”  She was indeed an angel among us. In 2011, Megan “fell up” on her 16th birthday.
